K-12 School Counseling for College and Career Readiness
WCPS school counselors utilize the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national model for school counseling to empower the academic, career, personal, and social development of students. In addition to their efforts with behavior interventions, bullying, suicide prevention and crisis interventions, school counselors work with students at all levels to develop college and career readiness skills and academic plans.
Elementary School Counselors deliver lessons using the Paws in Jobland program to help students begin identifying personal interests and exploring careers. These lessons build problem solving, critical thinking and reading comprehension skills with engaging animated activities and information on over one hundred careers.
Middle School Counselors use the Bridges Choices Explorer career development tools to deliver individual and classroom lessons and provide academic advising. Counselors also promote and facilitate visits to special high school programs such as Barbara Ingram School for the Arts and North Hagerstown High's International Baccalaureate Programme, coordinate the Johns Hopkins Talented Youth Search, advise students on their Student Service Learning requirements, and support the annual 8th Grade Day on the Job.
High School Counselors use the Bridges Choices Planner online program and other resources to provide academic, college, and career guidance. Counselors also arrange for college and military representatives to visit the school, oversee student service learning, track completion of graduation requirements, provide PSAT score analysis with students, and coordinate opportunities for students to conduct college visits, attend college fairs, complete college applications and transcript requests, and receive FAFSA assistance. WCPS Career Guidance Technicians collaborate with counselors to deliver academic, career, college, and financial aid presentations for all students. High school counselors also offer individualized college coaching sessions for students and their parents.
